Production of Newspaper

Here is a mock up outline of my front page, I used the programme Publisher to create this, it gives me the chance to play around with the layout and imagine what the page will look like.

• Masthead at the top of the page, may take up 2 lines as it is quite long; ' The Bedfordshire Times'
• Logo next to the masthead, have decided to go for a map outline of Bedfordshire. (Will be displayed on website and poster also)
• The date, price, and web address displayed along the top.
• A strip of features with headings and page numbers below.
• Main headline (storyline based on the cold weather we've been suffering and how Bedfordshire is lucky compared to some).
• Main image that relates to the headline with caption underneath.
• Main headline text surrounding the image.
• Advert at bottom of the page, with an image to match.

Main headline:

- "Bedfordshire escapes the cold snap" '"Rest of the country not so lucky..." I chose to go with this because it immediately lets the reader know it is about the county, it is also showing Bedfordshire in a positive light, calling it 'lucky' compared to the rest of the country.

- Large capital letter font, typical of newspapers.

- I will take a picture to match this story; an outside location that shows how the weather and snow has affected us.

- Text will follow continuing the news.

Other features:

- "Beds Youth pullout free inside!" Relates back to the website, appeals straight away to the younger people, also using the appetising word of 'free'.

- "Free map of Bedfordshire" As an introducing first issue of the newspaper I thought a free map of the audiences local area was very suitable.

- "Luton Carnival extravaganza!" Describing a fun and upcoming event with the appealing word of 'extravaganza'.

- Large text in white to stand out against the yellow and red (?) backgrounds.

- Shown with page numbers for easy navigation.

Advert:

- Some sort of teeth whitening company, needs a catchy slogan and appealing image of a smiling person?

- Contact numbers and offers on show.

Inside page mockup:

• Newspaper name/introduction at the top.
• Credits, with newspapers own promise, writers/photographers/editors names, email addresses and contact numbers.
• Contents; showing main areas of the newspaper with page numbers on where to find them including; Family announcements, jobs and property guide.
• Main headline, again in a large font.
• Image to match the headline story with caption underneath.
• Text about the main headline surrounding.
• Advert at the bottom of the page with an image.
• Note I may change this layout as am a bit concerned that the headline and following story will look a bit squashed in, considering have the credits and contents going horizontally across the top of the page and the story underneath with the advert to one side?

Headline:

"Rhinormous arrivals at Whipsnade" "Whipsnade Watch!" Have played on the words of rhinoceros and enormous to create the term 'rhinormous', is humorous and effective in describing the rhinos. Mention of Whipsnade zoo, local and well known, will attract readers to know what is going on there. "Whipsnade Watch!" A team of writers who focus on stories at Whipsnade to always keep the local public up to date. Will have an image of the rhinos at Whipsnade.
